When people feel they are still needed for meaningful judgment, they are more likely to stay engaged, proactive, and invested in the quality of their work.

Encouraging Critical Friction Instead of Passive Acceptance

AI systems often create an illusion of confidence. Outputs are fluent, fast, and neatly structured. That can make teams less likely to challenge them. Technology alone does not determine whether initiative survives. Leadership framing matters just as much. Teams pay attention to what leaders praise, measure, and normalize. If leaders celebrate only speed, output volume, and automated consistency, employees will quickly learn that independent thinking is secondary. If leaders value reflection, challenge, adaptation, and responsible use of AI, the culture develops differently.

In practice, this means leaders need to model the balance themselves. They should show that they use AI tools, but do not surrender their judgment to them.
