D2. Emerging Security Challenges
Globalization and global processes – such as climate change – have resulted in the emergence of a new set of security challenges that will confront national governments and global agencies in the coming decades. These security challenges include not only the combat of terrorism, as terrorists are able to exploit the informational, migratory and economic networks of globalization in order to achieve their aims, but also the challenges associated with the proliferation of inexpensive, accessible weapons of mass destruction, and potential social disruption due to environmental changes such as scarcity of water, mass migration and lack of fertile land. This panel will set out to address not only how policies and practices can be developed in order to confront these challenges, but how to best prioritize these multiple demands at the national and global level.
